Stitch, Print, Process

Funded by The Mayor of London Culture Seeds initiative
Made in Merton’s first project, launched with a Culture Seeds grant from the Mayor of London. We ran two free workshops: a sewing workshop for participants aged 16+ to create banners emblazoned with the words, ‘ART’, ‘MADE’ and ‘PEOPLE’; and a pennant-printing workshop for children and families. Both groups joined together in a procession along the River Wandle, chanting “Art made people! People made art!” This was a reference to William Morris’s belief in “art made by the people, and for the people” and a celebration of the craftsmanship that flourished in his Merton Abbey Works, which was situated on the Wandle. We processed from Merton Abbey Mills to outside Sainsbury’s/M&S on Merton High Street, which now stands on the site once occupied by Merton Abbey Works.
